Caption
Beatrix Potter made this pencil drawing of her pet rabbit, Peter Piper, in January 1898. As a child, Beatrix was deprived of peer companionship and the menagerie of pets she kept in her schoolroom provided friendship and company. This particular pet was described by Beatrix as her 'affectionate companion and quiet friend' to whom she 'was utterly devoted'. It is not surprising, then, that this he was reincarnated as a character in her most famous illustrated work, 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit' (1902).
