Summary
Two pencil drawings on a single sheet of paper. These are probably sketches for The Tale of Ginger and Pickles, as the two characters depicted both appear in that book; however, they also appear singly in earlier books which were being worked on in 1904. Left - the head of Jane the doll-cook. This is perhaps more likely to be a sketch for Ginger and Pickles than for The Tale of Two Bad Mice, as the rather grumpy expression on the doll's face is similar to that in the line illustration on page 11 of Ginger and Pickles. Compare this to the doll's face as it appears in Two Bad Mice. Right - a seated hedgehog. Mrs Tiggy-Winkle appears in Ginger and Pickles, but not seated in this attitude; nor does this drawing closely resemble any illustration for The Tale of Mrs Tiggy-Winkle. The attitude does however resemble the illustration of Old Mr Pricklepin that appears in Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes; Beatrix was working on this book in 1904 - when she was also working on The Tale of Two Bad Mice.
