Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Joanna Gibbs (1777-1823) by James Leakey (Exeter 1775 - Exeter 1865). Oval gold frame,. Looking to the right, wearing a white dress. Exhibited at Manchester, City Art Gallery, no. 3352. On the reverse under glass is a chequered pattern of dark brown hair. An oblong typed paper label stuck on the glass reads: Joanna Gibbs / James Leaky / 19. Underneath this is another label printed in blue reading: City OF MANCHESTER / ART GALLERY / 3352. A label attached to the hanging loop has been corrected from 1041 to read: 1039. Blue handwritting on the reverse of this label reads: Wife of / George of / Belmont. ( Sotheby's description ). James Leakey, 1775 - 1865. Joanna Gibbs, 1777 - 1823. Half length wearing white dress. ( James Leakey 1775 - 1865 was a painter of landscapes, portraits and miniatures from Exeter.
