Caption
Saint Chad holds Litchfield Cathedral as he was Bishop of Mercia, based there. Saint Chad was a student of Saint Aidan of Lindisfarne and was wrongfully appointed Bishop of York by King Oswald. This was later removed by the Archbishop of Canterbury who was so impressed by his humility that he granted him the post at Litchfield. Ecclesiastical positions held a lot of power and influence in the country leading to conflicts between the British Kings and the Church in Rome, leaving many clergy caught in between
Summary
Painted or stained glass window - Depicting Saint Chad bishop, Patron Saint of Mercia & Lichfield, holding a miniature of Litchfield Cathedral. The window is in the perpendicular style in the form of a pointed arch. The top lights are surrounded by tracery of the flowing decorated style, starting at the top two quatrefoil's with a tear drop beneath each and a single light to the bottom.
Provenance
Acquired with the estate in 1946 from the Trustees of the 9th Duke of Newcastle.
