Summary
Painted or stained glass window - The East window an the Chancel above the altar, showing Christ's work within the Church. The window is in the perpendicular style in the form of a pointed arch. The top lights are surrounded by tracery of the flowing decorated style, starting at the top a quadrafoil with small triangles to each side, beneath two furtther quadrafoils with a trifoil on each side and small triangular lights to the furthest points. The lights increase in size with two equaly shaped quadrafoils and triangles above with two further quadrafoils below. To each side a matching pair making up the tops of two smaller inner archs, at the top of each a quadrafiol with two trifoils below. Beneath these a pair of quadrafoils and a single between the base of the two, underneath two large elongated lights which house the depictions of the saints and a wider light in the centre with the teachings of Christ. In the top tracery depictions of the instruments of the passions, the pincers, sponge and reeds, the scourges, the nails and the crown of thorns. The wide central light depicts, from top to bottom, the Crucifixion with angels each side holding chalices to recieve the blood f Christ, below the tree in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve tasting the fruit and at the base the Pelican in her Piety an ancient emlem of the Eucharist. The far left lght, from top to bottom, shows St. Peter with keys and book, St. Joseph of Arimathea with tomb and crown of thorns and St Augustine of Hippo with flaming heart. The next row depict The Virgin Mary, St Hugh of Lincoln with his pet swan and model of te Cathedral and St Gregory with stafff. The far right light from top to bottom, shows St Paul with open book and sword, St Christopher with budding staff and a young Jesusu on his shoulder and St ambrose carrying a scourge. The next row in depicts St John the Divine, St Mary Magdelene with jar of oitment and St Jerome with his friendly lion. At the very base of the window in latin across all lights, 'Pray for the good estate of Henry, Seventh Duke of Newcastle - Under - Lyme, founder of this Church'.
