Summary
Painted or stained glass window - The west window is located in the Nave above the doorway and is called the 'Jesse Window' as it depicts the descent of Jesus Christ from Jesse through the principal kings of Judah (St. Matthew 1.6-16). The window is in the perpendicular style in the form of a pointed arch. The top lights are surrounded by tracery of the flowing decorated style, starting at the top a diamond form with two more beneath broken into fours and a futher three triangular shapes beneath. There are three large narrow lights beneath which depict the kings. At the foot of the window in the centre Jesse is shown asleep, from his body springs the stem of a vine encircled in the inscription, 'Jesse virgo floruit' (The rod of Jesse has blossomed). On the branches of the vine the principal kings are seated. Above Jesse David with harp and psalter and the motto, which translated reads, 'He shall cry unto me, "Thou art my father" (Psalm 89.26. Above him Solomon with the Book of Wisdom and at the top Mary with infant Jesus in her arms. The left hand depicts, from bottom to top, Ahaz King of Judah circa 736-727 BC. Above him Hezekiah holding the Dial of Ahaz (Chron 2:38.8), Uzziah with sword (Chron2:26) and Jehoshaphat who reigned circa 874-852 BC). The right hand shows, from bottom to top, Rehoboam the only son of Solomon, Abijah Solomon's grandson who reigende circa 920-917 BC. Above them Asa holding a fortress (Chron 2:14.6) and Jeboram with sword (Chron 2:21.4).
