Summary
A carved oak and cedar octagonal gothic font, designed by the Reverend Ernest Geldart (1848-1929), English, circa 1912 - 1920. The font depicts the Supreme Sacrifice and the Seven Sacraments; Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Matrimony, the Holy Eucharist, Holy Orders, Absolution and Extreme Unction. The pinnacle is surmounted by a pelican, which is the symbol of reincarnation. The piece is removable. Doors to the side of the font enclose a deep lead octagonal baptism bowl.
Full description
The baptistery holds the octagonal font, which has eight cedar panels and a cover, designed by Geldart, an Anglican cleric and architect who was engaged on the final phase of work on the chapel following the quarrel and subsequent discharge of George Frederick Bodley R.A. (1827-1907).
Provenance
Acquired with the estate by the National Trust in 1946 from the Trustees of the 9th Duke of Newcastle.
