In the 16th and 17th centuries chairs were seen as status symbols and were only used by the head of the household. Therefore stools were the most common form of seating and were used by the majority of people. They were not only used for seating but also as small tables and foot stools. Interestingly they were used by people of different social classes and could be found in the homes of yeoman farmers and the aristocracy as well as in meeting houses such as Loughwood.
