Full description
Percussion rifle of the “Pennsylvania-Kentucky” type by Palemon Powell, Cincinnati, USA, c1820, converted from flintlock, c1840, by Dowling (probably William Dowling, Manchester). Rifled octagonal iron barrel, with silver blade fore-sight and a raised rear-sight. Engraved with the makers name at the breech, P.POWELL, CINCINNATI. Converted to percussion using drum and nipple method. Retained to the stock by 4 barrel-slides, each with silver escutcheon plates. Barrel length 120cm. Calibre 9.5mm. Figured maple (?) full-stock, inset on the left side with a silver oval engraved with the American eagle. Brass furniture comprising, curved butt-plate, trigger guard with finger piece, and 3 ramrod pipes.Iron ramrod. Later percussion lock, of flat form, engraved DOWLING. Retained to the stock by 1 side-nail. Overall length: 152.5cm
