Full description
Percussion sporting rifle by Charles Swinburn, Birmingham (1834-83), c1840. Rifled octagonal barrel of Damascus twist construction, the breech with safety vent, the barrel tang engraved with a leopards head and scrolling . Under-rib with 2 ramrod pipes (missing). Blade fore-sight (of bone) and 3 leaf rear-sight. Engraved with makers name at the breech, SWINBURN MAKER. Retained to the stock by 1 barrel-slide. The ramrod missing. Length 86.8cm. Calibre 19mm. Walnut half-stock, chequered at the wrist. Engraved furniture comprising; butt-plate, trigger guard with finger piece and decorative finial, circular butt-trap with hinged cover and 1 ramrod pipe. Silver fore-end cap. Sling swivel and vacant silver escutcheon to butt. Percussion lock, of flat form, scroll engraved and with makers name SWINBURN. Retained to the stock by 1 side-nail. Overall length: 129cm
