Breech-loading rifle by R. Hunter (unrecorded), the “Snider-type” breech manufactured by J. Rigby & Co., Dublin, and dated 1865. Round rifled barrel, stamped with Birmingham proof marks (NP under a Crown), together with the initial S pierced with an arrow and the number 25 (twice). “Snider-type” hinged breech (length 6.3cm) which tips up for loading, marked on the top SNIDERS PATENT and J.RIGBY & Co., DUBLIN. Blade fore-sight and a calibrated ramp type rear-sight. Retained to the stock by 2 barrel-bands, the forward band with a sling-swivel. The muzzle with a bayonet lug, marked 246. Steel cleaning rod. Barrel length 77.4cm. Calibre 15mm. Walnut three-quarter stock, with chequered wrist and fore-stock. Engraved iron furniture comprising; butt-plate, trigger guard (the tang with a sling-swivel- the forward end with an attached chain and firing-pin safety cap), and 1 cleaning rod pipe. Side-lock with hammer, of flat form, engraved and with makers name and date, R. HUNTER 1865. Retained to the stock by 2 side-nails. Overall length: 124cm
