Estates purchased fire carts and employed their own crews. They would also assist at fires nearby, providing there was evidence of insurance. Luckily, the 4th Earl of Hardwicke purchased this cart in 1842, just months before fire broke out in the new wing at Wimpole in 1843.
Summary
A fire cart. Painted red, with gold lettering 'Wimpole Hall'.
Provenance
Part of the Bambridge Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1976 by Mrs Elsie Bambridge (1896-1976)
