Summary
A set of walnut library steps, or a library ladder, circa 1835 - 1840, made by Miles & Edwards of 134 Oxford Street, London. Tapering towards the top, and of twelve treads, all lined with carpet, and topped by a broader rest or shelf. -- Miles & Edwards were based in Oxford Street between 1822 and 1844. This ladder is stamped with the design/product number 8804.
Provenance
Date of acquisition not recorded, but probably acquired by George Bambridge (1892 - 1943) and Elsie Bambridge (1896 - 1976), who purchased a largely empty Wimpole in 1938. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust by Elsie Bambridge in 1976.
