Summary
One of a pair of ebonized, turtleshell, brass-inlaid and ormolu-mounted display cabinets, French, circa 1860. With a moulded cornice above a brass-inlaid frieze and a pair of glazed doors enclosing five shelves and with a brass-inlaid and ormolu-mounted lower panel. The inlay throughout of arabesques and scrolls. With foliate-cast gilt mounts to the angles, feet and shaped plinth apron. Lined to the interior with velvet. Modified and re-configured in the early 20th century.
Provenance
Reputedly purchased by Elsie Bambridge in 1960. Listed in the 1965 inventory of Wimpole in the Gallery. George Bambridge (1892 - 1943) and Elsie Bambridge (1896 - 1976) purchased a largely empty Wimpole in 1938. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust in 1976 by Elsie Bambridge.
