Summary

Robert Withers (fl.1815 - 1830) and Bradbury Last (fl.1815). A Survey of the Park at Wimpole, Cambridgeshire, c.1815, inscribed in a decorative cartouche at bottom right 'Wimpole Park and Farm situate in The Parishes of Wimpole and Arrington, and COUNTY OF CAMBRIDGE; the Property of the Right Honourable Philip Earl of Hardwicke, BT.', 'Scale of 8 Chains to an Inch', 'Surveyed by Robert Withers', and 'Map'd by B. Last, Whepstead', pen and ink with coloured washes (560 x 645mm), the north-west corner is missing, scale: 8 chains to 1 inch.

Full description

This is probably the map that Robert Withers made in 1815 and which he refers to in the introductory comments to the bound volume of fourteen Wimpole estate maps dated 1828. Of interest here are Stuart's Hill House, shown surrounded by a garden and palisade fence, and the ice-house at the northern end of the 'One and a half Avenue'. The church is not shown in plan and appears to have been sketched in as an afterthought in its medieval form. Catalogue entry adapted from David Adshead, Wimpole Architectural drawings and topographical views, The National Trust, 2007

Provenance

The gift of Miss J McNeice and her brother, Mr McNeice, 1983
