Summary
Henry Edward Kendall (1776 - Westminster 1875). Sketch elevation for a glazed entrance porch at Wimpole Hall, Cambridgeshire, circa 1840, pencil (155 x 228mm).
Full description
This rough sketch must surely be by Kendall, for the heavily banded piers topped by urns are the language of his alterations at Wimpole. This appears to be an initial idea for a glazed porch for the entrance in the principal, or south, elevation of the house. The first floor Venetian window at the centre of the three bay break-front is shown immediately above the porch. Catalogue entry adapted from David Adshead, Wimpole Architectural drawings and topographical views, The National Trust, 2007
Provenance
Charles Philip Yorke, 4th Earl of Hardwicke (1799 - 1873); bequeathed by Elsie Kipling, Mrs George Bambridge (1896 – 1976), daughter of Rudyard Kipling, to the National Trust together with Wimpole Hall, all its contents and an estate of 3000 acres.
Makers and roles
attributed to Henry Edward Kendall (York 1776 - Westminster 1875), architect
