Summary

Watercolour on paper, The Love-Sick Maid (The Use of Tears) by Richard Parkes Bonington (1801-1828), signed (?) bottom centre Bonnington pinx. Apparently, Bonington's own reduction of his very similar oil painting (1826-7; Boston Museum of Fine Arts), and not a copy by another hand.

Provenance

Bought by Joseph Balestier in Paris, circa 1860-70, and bequeathed to his grand-daughter, Caroline Balestier, Mrs Rudyard Kipling;
