Summary
Crystal gasolier. Soane design c.1816. Fuelled directly from the estate gasworks. Possible that the lights were lit using a design by the German scientist Johann Wolfgang Dobereiner whereby the gas ignites automatically when passed over a black platinum nipple. The controls for regulating the flow of gas can be seen in the doorway to the Inner Hall.
