Summary
Lava on marmo nero belgio plinth, The sarcophagus of Lucius Cornelius Scipio Barbatus (d.280 BC). An Italian lava model of Scipio's sarcophagus, after the Antique, on a marmo nero belgio plinth. His sarcophagus was discovered in the Tomb of the Scipios (the only one to survive complete there), and is now in the Vatican Museums. It preserves his epitaph, written in Old Latin Saturnian meter which translates:Cornelius Lucius Scipio Barbatus, sprung from Gnaeus his father, a man strong and wise, whose appearance was most in keeping with his virtue, who was consul, censor, and aedile among you - He captured Taurasia, Cisauna, Samnium - he subdued all Lucania and led off hostages.
Provenance
Purchased from the estate of the late Lord Wraxall with the assistance of the NHMF and donations from members and supporters.
