Summary
Door to Workshop, designed by Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens (London 1869 - London 1944) and Gertrude Jekyll (1843 - 1932) in collaboration. The lower portion of the front face is panelled walnut, the upper portion features an octagon panel created with a moulding surrounded on four corners by turned circular mouldings, inside this are eight inlaid foliate decorations made from bone, mother of pearl and abalone centred on each corner. In the middle, a faceted octagon in relief in ebonised fruitwood is surrounded by a dentilled moulding. The back face is oak. The door features an elaborate lock plate and handle to a design by Lutyens. Original drawings of the door are in the RIBA collection.
Provenance
Designed and made by Gertrude Jekyll and Edwin Lutyens in c. 1896 and remained in situ at Munstead Wood. Acquired as fixtures and fittings with purchase of Munstead Wood in April 2023, with support from Arts Council England's Acceptance in Lieu Scheme.
