Summary
Print, coloured engraving in modern wooden frame. Shows right profile view of heifer known as the Airedale Heifer with East Riddleston Hall in the background. Inscription below. Engraved by Richard Gilson Reeve (London 1803 – 1889). This large cow was bred for size and weight by its owner, Mr Slingsby of Carleton-in-Craven, who kept it on the East Riddlesden Hall estate where his sister and brother-in-law were tenants. It was said to have been 3.5 metres (over 11 feet) long and weighed more than a ton and became a much-visited local animal celebrity until its slaughter following a serious injury in 1830. It is still remembered in the name of a local pub. The heifer was recorded in a painting by Keighley artist John Bradley (1787-1844), from which this print was produced c.1831. Either this painting or another version is illustrated on p29 of 'Farm Animal Portraits' by Moncrieff, Joseph & Joseph (1999).
