Summary
Yorkshire Wolds Wagon built by W. Sissons, builder, Kilnwick (on builders plate and axle caps). Kilnwick is in East Yorkshire between Beverley and Driffield. Each wheel has 12 spokes. Cobble and swing trees are still in place. The headboard and tailboard are of rail and spindle construction, indicating early date. The plank sides appear to have been cut from single boards. Chamfering, scalloping and other decorative work. Engraved oil caps are fitted to the stocks. Much paint worn off, but wheels were red lined black and body stone colour lined and decorated blue and red. The 'Wolds wagon' is the largest of three distinctly Yorkshire variants of wagon (the others being Dales and Moors). This example may date to the late 19th/early 20th century and is by a well-known maker who was based in the East Riding.
