Full description
Tang Yin was a Chinese scholar, poet, calligrapher and painter who lived during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). He showed great intellectual promise in his youth, but due to involvement in a scandal he was unable to continue with his examinations and could not succeed in government service. He earned a living from selling his paintings, which was frowned upon by some as not befitting a scholar-gentleman. Nevertheless, he was later celebrated as one of the 'four masters of the Ming'. With grateful acknowledgement to Xie Yun for identifying the artist's name and the Shanghai Museum seal.
