Full description
Photograph of a portrait of George Kennedy Allen Bell (1883-1958 Bishop of Chichester by Eric Henri Kennington, RA (Chelsea 1888 – Reading 1960). George Kennedy Allan Bell (1883-1958) was an Anglican theologian, Dean of Canterbury, Bishop of Chichester, member of the House of Lords, and a pioneer of the Ecumenical Movement. Born in 1883, Bell was a graduate of Christ Church College, Oxford where he later worked as a study minister and academic tutor. During the war years, he spoke out against Nazi imprisonment of the Jews and used his influence with the press for the release of Pastor Niemöller's imprisonment and release. He was a strong opponent of Allied area bombing, and an advocate of the German Resistance Movement and gained British Government Support. In later years he was overlooked for the role of Archibishop of Canterbury for being too outspoken. Eric Henri Kennington (1888-1960) was educated at the Lambeth School of Art. He fought on the Western front during World War I, but was discharged as unfit. In 1917 returned to front as an official war artist. He was chiefly a sculptor, but was also known for producing illustrations for T. E. Lawrence's 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom'. He was buried Chechendon where in his later years he acted as a church warden.
