Keep Britain Tidy The Keep Britain Tidy campaign was launched primarily that Britain may look her best for it's many visitors, launched by Mr Dalton, Ministry of Local Government & Planning and Mr Stokes, Minister of Works who is now responsible for the Festival of Planning. In1954 there were concerns about the amount of litter on the streets of Britain, and the British Women's Institutes, under the National Chair of Lady Brunner, passed a resolution to 'Keep Britain Tidy'. In 1955 The Keep Britain Tidy Group was formed. At first the new organization was provided with office space at the NFW1 headquarters, though later it found its own premises. Lady Brunner continued to be associated with the Keep Britain Tidy Group and was their first Chairman. In 1961, Keep Britain Tidy became an independent organization and received its first official government funding. On 23rd June 1961, Lady Brunner announced that the Queen Mother was to become Patron of the Keep Britain Tidy Group. in 1964, Lady Brunner was appointed OBE 'for devotion to the group and her continual concerns for its success since its inception'. Lady Brunner was President of the group for 19 years and after that remained its Senior Vice President until her death. Queen Mother's Birthday Awards Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was given an honours list of her own to mark her 100th birthday. The Queen is the only member of the Royal Family normally entitled to award honours, but The Queen Mother's Birthday Awards was a one off gesture to mark the enormous contribution that she made to the nation over the last century.
