Summary
Glass spirit decanter with stopper, part of a set of four spirit decanters and stoppers with stand. Made of green glass with gilded decoration in the form of a hanging label for 'Shrub'. The lozenge-shaped stopper corresponds with an 'S'. Probably made by the Non-Such Flint Glass Manufactory (possibly by Isaac Jacobs), Bristol, 1800-1815. 'Shrub' originates from the Arabic word for 'sharaba' which means 'to drink' and is a syrup/liqueur that was typically made with rum or brandy, sugar, and the juice or rinds of citrus fruits. The early English version of shrub arose as a result of the medicinal cordials of the 15th century.
Provenance
Gifted to the National Trust from the Estate of Lady Elizabeth Brunner, 2005.
