Full description
Welsh dresser in oak(?), with three drawers in base unit, and three shelf unit above, with side cupboards (lockable spice cabinets). Side cupboards have ogee arched tops, with two smaller shelves above. Brass drawer and cupboard furniture. Whole stands on cabriole legs. Dates around 1780. Origins of the dresser started in the mid 17th century, and would typically only have been seen in the kitchens of large houses or mansions. The dining room piece is slightly rarer than most as it has distinctive spice cupboards, used to store medical herbs. It does not display (as many do), the pot board at floor level, used to store/display large pots and utensils. Most likely made in oak though similar items would have been seen in pine and worked to resemble oak.
Provenance
Gifted to the National Trust from the Estate of Lady Elizabeth Brunner, 2005.
