Summary
Stone memorial plaque commemorating the relationship between WIlliam Briwere the founder of Mottisfont Abbey, and Gilbert Russell (1875-1942), who with his wife Maud (1891-1982), purchased the property in 1934. S. Sagar, Clipsham Stone, 1939.
Full description
Gilbert (1875-1942) and Maud Russell (1891-1982) purchased Mottisfont Abbey in 1934. After the purchase, genealogical research showed that Gilbert was a descendant of WIlliam Briwere (d.1226) who had founded the Augustinian Priory on the site in 1201. To commemorate this fact, the Russells commissioned this plaque in 1939, although it was only erected in 1942. The plaque's inscription is written in Latin, and reads: AD MAIOREM DEI GLORIAM. ET IN PIAM MEMORIAM WILLELMI DE BREWER. HUIUS PRIORATUS FUNDATORIS. HUNC LAPIDEM POSUIT GILBERTUS RUSSELL. ISTIUS VICESIMA SEXTA GENERATIONE PRONEPOS. DOMUS AGRORUMQUE DE MOTTISFONT EX EADEM STIRPE POST SEPTEM SAECULA DOMINUS MCMXXXVIIII The inscription can be translated into English as follows: To the greater glory of God, and in pious memory of William Brewer, founder of this priory. This stone was placed by Gilbert Russell, his descendant of the twenty-sixth generation, lord of the house and estate of Mottisfont, of the same stock after seven centuries. 1939
Provenance
Commissioned by Gilbert and Maud Russell for Mottisfont Abbey, Hampshire. Transferred to the National Trust with Mottisfont Abbey and Estate under Maud Russell's Memorandum of Wishes, 1957.
