Summary
Base of neck with some of adjoining back of right shoulder area, one of thirteen fragments forming part of lifesize togate figure wearing senatorial shoes and stands with its weight over the left leg. The drapery is rendered in many deep folds to give the sense of ample material. The rendering of the drapery and the capsa, bookcase at the feet recall the Augustus of Via Labicana. The capsa has a lower moulded edge. The drapery folds at the back are fully rendered but larger and flatter (more schematic) than those at the front. The statue was once a finely carved piece that resembled in dress, pose, and statue support the famous statue of Augustus (ca. AD 10) found on the Via Labicana in Rome. This statue wears the fancy senatorial shoes. They are a leather sock-like shoe with crisscrossing straps over the top of the foot which tie in two knots around the ankle and shin. Though badly damaged, the fragments combine to form the most complete of the Downhill togate statues.
