Summary
1908: 1935: pl.xxxii.2. 'Sarsen walling in Avebury village, the material having been obtained by splitting up some of the great stones of the Avebury circles. Taken on the Marlborough road immediately on leaving the Red Lion, Avebury, close to the entrance gate of the field containing the finest remaining stones on Lord Avebury's property.' From notes: 'vi.10 18 1 walling, result of vandalism in the circle of Avebury. Brilliant 11am June 4 stp 3.5 2 secs near subject. Negative with RCHM. Wall no longer exists.
