Summary

Two engravings mounted within one frame. The left hand engraving shows a view of St Vincent's Rocks and Hotwells. To the left of the scene are three sailing boats with a boat keeled over and being towed by two men in a rowing boat in the foreground. To the right of the scene is a seven man rowing boat and two men on the shore with poles. Below the print is written, View of St Vincent's Rocks, (and) the Hotwells Near Bristol / (A.D. 1752) / F. Smith pin. / PRINTED FOR JOHN BOWLES No 13 in Cornhill London / Benoist Sculp. The right hand engraving shows a view of Avon Gorge from Durdham Downs. The scene shows five sailing ships with their sails down, the first two are being towed by rowing boats, there are also four figures and three goats on the shore in the foreground. Below the print is written, A view from Durdham Down near Bristol looking down the Avon to Kings Road (and) the Welch Mountains / F. Smith pin. / PRINTED FOR JOHN BOWLES No 13 in Cornhill London / Chatelaine (and) Nevares Sculp. The light oak coloured wooden frame has an inner gilt border. The prints have some damage with brown watermark stains, the mount has buckled in the area betwen the prints and the backing paper on the reverse is torn.
