Stained glass window at east end of St Cuthbert's Chapel comprising six seperate lights including three lancets depicting St Aidan, St Cuthbert, and St Ethelbald. The window is dedicated to Grace Darling and Charles Thorp.
Full description
(From report buy Chapel Glass 1996) The window is of three lights and three traceries and is typical of the Victorian Gothic revival style. Each light consists of a figure within a tall medallion with a smaller medallion above and below each figure. The window is a memorial to Grace Darling and Charles Thorp, the latter being responsible for the restoration of the Chapel in the 1840s. The figures from left to right are; St Aiden, St Cuthbert, and St Ethelwald with the upper medallions representing Alpha and Omega (top centre), the Holy Spirit (top of each side light), and the Pelican in her Piety (base centre).
Provenance
Created for the Chapel by William Wailes of Newcastle in 1844 as part of the restoration of that building by Archdeacon Charles Thorp.
