Summary
Print, black and white etching, Napoleon's Retreat from Moscow (after Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier) by A. Salmon. Black ink etching of Napoleon in military uniform, greatcoat and hat on horseback leading a column of mounted soldiers along a muddy track. Massed soldiers march in background. Signed in lower right corner, Meissonier 1864. Publisher's details at top of image read, Imprimerie A. Salmon. London / London Published 1903 by Henry Graves and Co. Ltd. 6 Pall Mall Stiefbold and Co. Berlin Copyright U.S.A. Below the main image there ia a casket or tomb and an indecipherable pencil signature. White card mount surrounded by thin gold border on outer edge. Wooden frame painted black and gold. Frame outer and inner edges gold with black band in between. Inner edge decorated with repeated semicircle design, outer edge with ridged line pattern. Frame damaged. Written in chalk on badly torn backing sheet, 4478. Plywood backing board with woodworm holes. Two metal eye hooks screwed into frame at top with short pieces of wire and string attached.
