Summary
Complete Floor Tile - Design 2 - Sharington impaling Faringdon. Half chequerboard design and half three unicorns within a thick boarder. Olive green glazed body with a light yellow/cream inlay. From a collection of 10 designs of tiles commissioned for Lacock Abbey by William Sharington. Manufactured between 1550-3. Probably interchangeable in a carpet pattern with designs 3, 7, 8, 28 and 31 (Group A – Burnett-Brown Tile Collection Report). Most of the glaze is intact. One corner is chipped away and there is some areas where glaze is lost. There is a thin stripe horizontally across the top of tile approximately 1inch from edge.
Provenance
Purchased with the family collection of Abbey contents in situ, from Mrs Petronella Burnett-Brown, December 2009.
