Summary
Bronze, gilt bronze and ormolu, Candelabra in the form of Winged Victory in the style of Pierre-Philippe Thomire (Paris 1751 – Paris 1843). One of a pair of Empire candelabra in the style of Pierre Philippe Thomire, one supported by a patinated bronze figure of Mercury, the other of winged Victory, each with six cornucopia-shaped scrolled arms in chased ormolu cast with typical motifs in two tiers, the lower tier terminating in swags of fruit and flowers supporting triple branches, the high central sticks surmounted by eagles perched within garlands, the supporting figures standing with one leg on blued steel celestial hemispheres studded with stars, on simulated Griotte marble cylindrical bases, finely mounted in scenes of the battle between the Lapiths and the Centaurs, raised in turn on circular gilt-bronze bases chased with foliate scrolls and anthemion.
