Summary
Williamson F24 Aerial Camera body and gearbox, type E. The Williamson F.24 camera was the main air reconnaissance camera at the start of World War 2. It continued to be in use until the mid 1950s. It could be mounted in the wings of a plane for low-level vertical imagery. Metal, painted yellow. Glass screen, below which is a plaque with the following details: "BODY. AM, ref no. 14A/720. Serial No. k8 8617" Another plaque reads: "Gearbox Type E. ref. no. 14A/2500 AM. Serial No. AA 02751" Handle on side next to which is a white painted E. Lens markings: "VV179543 5 in f.4" (AM refers to Air Ministry.)
Provenance
Part of the Fenton Collection. A gift from British Film Institute in 2017. From 1986-1999, part of BFI collection for the Museum of the Moving Image. BFI purchased collection in 1986 from James Fenton's Museum of Photography, Port Erin, Isle of Man 1976-1986.
