Summary

Thornton Pickard roller blind shutter with pneumatic ball in original box.1892-1900 A Time and Instantaneous patented shutter with speed indicator by Thornton Pickard. The shutter has a polished wood casing made with fine finger joints at the corners. To the front is a brass ring around circular hole with screw threads for fixing to a lens. Printed in a painted off white disc on the side is the manufacturer's mark in ornate black script is "ALTRINCHAM THORNTON PICKARD ENGLAND". Black and brown rubber tube and bulb in stripy zebra pattern with patent embossed on bulb "THORNTON PICKARD" and "PATENT NO. 8765". The rubber relase bulb is held in place by a flat projecting piece on the metal long release arm. The tube is fitted with a Time Valve with speeds ranging from 0-3 seconds. Speed Indicator has range of 1/75 - 1/15 printed on white paper on a brass disc. "T I" is carved into casing by rubber release bulb. Red square original cardboard box with illustrated square label in yellow paperdepicting the shutter and "THORNTON PICKARD PATENT TIME and INST. WITH SPEED INDICATOR" and "SIZE..." printed in black ink. Handwritten in pencil next to "SIZE" is "2 1/2" followed by illegible script and "Time Valve". Instructions in black printed ink on orange paper have been adhered to inside of box. Handwritten in pencil on bottom of box is "No. 21".

Part of the Fenton Collection. A gift from British Film Institute in 2017. From 1986-1999, part of BFI collection for the Museum of the Moving Image. BFI purchased collection in 1986 from James Fenton's Museum of Photography, Port Erin, Isle of Man 1976-1986
