Summary
Gelatine silver glass dry plate negative in portrait format, depicting a path through the trees, on the Tokaido Road to Hakone, in Japan. The path is lined with large Cryptomeria japonica (Japanese cedar - sugi) trees. The Cedar Avenue near Hakone was planted four centuries ago along both sides of the Tokaido to shade travellers as they made their way around the shoreline of Lake Ashinoko towards Hakone. Additional information handwritten on the sleeve (not original): "61. June 18 1909. Hakone, Tokaido, Cryptomeria . SSO F/16 1½ Part of the Christie Miller Collection.
