Summary
Ambrotype with hand tinting depicting a woman seated, holding an infant. The woman wears a cape and bonnet which is tied under her chin. Both their cheeks have been lightly hand tinted with pinkish red pigment and the bonnet ribbons and parts of the child's dress are tinted pale blue. The image is set in a tray which is wood covered in black leather, and contains the image plate, a decorated brass mat with curved edges and a sheet of cover glass, all of which are in an brass preserver frame within a fabric lined case tray. The leather on the front has a scallop pattern embossed. The left side of the case has two hinged clips which would originally have secured a lid (missing). It appears likely that originally there was a lid hinged on the top edge of the case. Markings: None. Deterioration: Missing lid of case; damage to the leather covering of the case: some small pieces missing.
