Summary
A monochrome gelatine silver photograph in landscape format, depicting the terrace steps at Kircassock House, Co. Down, Northern Ireland. The image is mounted on black paper and then on dark grey card. The view is mature trees and lawned grounds, viewed from the top of the terrace steps. In the 1860s, this house was owned by Jonathan Richardson, MP, who employed Alfred Waterhouse to rebuild it in the style of the time. replaced. During WW2, the main house was the headquarters of the 8th US Air Force Composite Command from November 1942. It is believed that Winston Churchill and General Eisenhower both stayed at the house when visiting personnel in Northern Ireland. After the war the site was cleared except for some farmyard buildings. A gatelodge also remains. The image has a matt finish and there is some deterioration with silvering around the edges. Markings: Verso: Handwritten in black ink: "Kircassock, Co. Down. Terrace steps" Part of the Christie-Miller collection; photographs taken by Charles Wakefield Christie-Miller (1877-1976), and donated to the Fox Talbot Museum upon his death by his daughter, Jane Wakefield Christie-Miller (1922-2017).
