Summary
A calotype, salt print that depicts a pair of columns, mounted on a plinth. They are topped with a tall abacus on which sits a sphinx. They are located in the gardens of Lacock Abbey, and are possibly located as a folly. There is antedotal evidence that they are actually old chimney pots from the Abbey, that were considered surplus during remodelling. The salt print is on the left and the calotype is on the right. The image is mounted on heavy white card, with a heavy white card frame Markings: Verso. Handwritten in pencil on the left of the lefthand image, "The narrow passage", "Claudio Santambrogio 2014".
Provenance
Donated on 25 April 2014 to the Fox Talbot Museum by Claudio Santambrogio of Milan Italy.
