An ambrotype one-ninth-plate image depicting a three-quarter-length studio portrait of a Victorian man seated, resting his left elbow on a small pedestal. He wears a dark suit with waistcoat and a white collar and pocket handkerchief. The image is set in a lidded wooden case covered in maroon leather/leatherette and lined with maroon velvet. The case hinges with leather and has a brass clasp. The back and front covers have a simple embossed pair of parallel lines within the leather and next to each is a fine gold line. The interior edges of the case where the leather/leatherette wraps round each side has a simple painted gold line. It is set under glass, beneath which is a nonpareil brass mat with fine embossed border. There is an ornate brass preserver. Condition/deterioration: The right hand side of the brass preserver is missing. There is mould on the brass mat beneath the glass.
