Summary
An ambrotype quarter plate image depicting a three-quarter-length studio portrait of a Victorian man and woman seated, playing chess on a small table. The image is set in a maroon leather-edged case lined with blue velvet, with gold scroll decoration around the rim and a hanging loop at the top. As this was intended for hanging, there is no cover. The back of the case is brown leatherette. It is set behind a decorative brass mat, which has a diamond pattern and raised edges The top of the mat is arched. There is a rectangular cover glass and a decorative narrow brass preserver. Condition/deterioration: The varnish coating shows cracking across the whole image. The top edge of the case has become detached.
