Summary
A daguerreotype one-sixth plate image depicting a three-quarter-length studio portrait of an older man with white hair and a full white beard. He is seated, holding a stick in his left hand. There is a backdrop of countryside and trees. The image is set behind a gold painted glass mat, with rounded top corners and square bottom corners. There is a rectangular cover glass and a decorative narrow brass preserver. These elements are set in a maroon leather case decorated on front and back with an embossed pattern of foliage, flowers, scrolls and birds. The inner rim of the case on right and left halves is decorated with a gold border. The case has a single swing pin closure on the right, and the lid is lined in red velvet with an embossed pattern of foliage and scrolls. The lid has become detached but originally was self-hinged by the leather covering.
