Summary
A relievo ambrotype ninth-plate image, depicting a full-length portrait of a young girl sitting face on to the camera. There is a very small amount of hand colouring on her cheeks. The background of the image has been removed to produce a relievo effect. She is sitting in a small child-sized chair. Her left hand is resting her lap, holding open a thin book/pamphlet. Her right elbow is resting on the arm of the chair. She is a wearing a dress and boots. The 1/9th plate image is set behind a glass mat, painted with a tortoiseshell pattern. It has a bevel-edged wide gold border with rounded corners the aperture and a narrow gold border around this, at a space of approximately 5mm. There is a rectangular cover glass. These layers are bound together by black tape on a wooden frame. Verso has a blue cover paper across the surface, affixed at the edges by the same black tape. Deterioration/condition: The tortoiseshell effect has scratches and chips. The varnish on the image shows reticulation. There is overall oxidation, giving a silvery metallic appearance.
