Summary
A Daguerreotype one-sixth plate image depicting a half length portrait of a married woman sitting face on to the camera. Her left hand is resting on a table, which also has a closed book lying on it. Her right hand is resting on her lap and she has rings on both hands. She is also wearing a choker around her neck, with a large brooch below on a lace blouse, as evidenced by the large cuffs. The image is set behind a black glass mat which has a wide gold border with rounded corners at the aperture and a narrow gold border around this, at a space of approximately 5mm. There is a rectangular cover glass. These layers are bound together by black tape on a wooden frame. Verso has a black leatherette type cover paper across the surface, affixed at the edges by the same black tape. There is a brass ring at the top, for hanging the portrait. The image shows significant deterioration, with a pronounced halo produced by oxidation of the silver.
Provenance
Donated on 11 July 2017 to the Fox Talbot Museum by Mr G. Stamp, London.
