Summary
A monochrome gelatine silver print stereograph of burnt out shops,High Street, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. There are numerous people looking at the aftermath of the fire, and it appears that is is still smoldering, with smoke rising. Surprisingly, the building on the right appears undamaged. The 2 images have square corners and are straight edged, with a space of 4mm between them. They are mounted on card which is burgundy on recto and white verso. It has rectangular corners. The image was quite likely taken by T.H. Pettipher of Oxfordshire, based on similar images in the same set. Markings: Recto - none. Verso. Handwritten in pencil , "Fire at Simons and Morrisons Hight St 1901".
Provenance
Donated on 5 September 2012 to the Fox Talbot Museum by Mrs Sylvia Warwick.
