Summary
A monochrome gelatine silver print stereograph of a view of snow clearance on the Oxford Road, Southcombe, Chipping Norton. The 2 images are straight edged with no space between them. They are mounted on card which is dark burgundy on recto and dark grey-brown on verso. It has rounded corners. The image depicts a view of 6 men clearing snow, using shovels, near the Quiet Woman pub. The snow on the road is very deep - the height of the men, though the road has been cleared in the background. Surprisingly, the surrounding fields are free of snow. Markings: Recto, under the right hand image, handwritten in white ink "5" and in the top right hand corner, handwritten in pencil "51". Verso, handwritten in pencil, "Snow Feb 25th 1916" and " The Quiet Woman, Chipping Norton".
Provenance
Donated on 5 September 2012 to the Fox Talbot Museum by Mrs Sylvia Warwick.
