Summary
An unbound album of Woodburytype portraits by Lock and Whitfield, from a series entitled 'Men of Mark, A Gallery of Contemporary Portraits.' Each photograph is a vignette portrait mounted onto heavy, off-white paper within an oval decorative border. The selection includes 17 portraits, 12 of them accompanied by biographical texts on separate pages. Part of a series of seven volumes entitled 'Men of Mark'. Published between 1876 and 1883, each volume featured 36 portraits of prominent men of the time. A brief biographical essay by Thompson Cooper (1837-1904) accompanied each portrait. Published by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, CROWN BUILDINGS 188, FLEET STREET LONDON. A single front cover for Vol.VI No. LXIII, dated March 1881, front this selection from the series.
