Watercolour, Narcissi and other Spring Flowers in Vases on a Bookcase by Edward Augustus Bowles (1865-1954). Signed and dated 'E.A. Bowles 1929'. Watercolour 76 x 50 cm Frame 91 x 65 cm. Given, 2000, by Professor Donald and Mrs. Pigott, who had been given it by Bishop Leslie Brown, who, as a boy, knew E.A. Bowles. EDWARD AUGUSTUS BOWLES (but always known as E.A. Bowles) The picture was donated by Bishop Leslie Brown who, as a boy, knew E.A. Bowles. Bowles (1865-1954) was a distinguished horticulturist who wrote several influential popular books on gardening and specialist books on narcissus and crocus. He was a gifted artist who illustrated his books with delicate watercolours but also painted large floral pictures in the same medium.
